This is the journal of a twenty-nine-year-old woman living in Brooklyn with three friends and her cat.

There are personal things, there are stupid things, there are fannish things. I write them all down here because that's the only way I'll remember any of it.

If you're here for fic, my master list is directly below.

Fanfiction — Doctor Who — Master List

Doctor Who - Bad Wolf TARDIS Idris
As I have reached the point of having more than just one or two Doctor Who-related fanworks running about, I thought it was time for me to mock up a so-called "master list." Basic info here, and I'll link to chapter directories where applicable, because I'm a bit of a micro-manager.

Much Ado About Fail

Scrubs - sent from the future, destroy me, ugh
I JUST HAD AN INTERESTING EXPERIENCE.

So I was trying to download Much Ado About Nothing. (This one.) Legally, before anyone raises their eyebrows in my direction. I'm looking at you, G-Men... Anyway, as the site is UK-based (duh) the money is in pounds, not dollars, and I tried to use my debit card... Apparently, this was not cricket, and so the purchase didn't go through. As it shouldn't. I fix things so it will charge me in the currency I actually use, change over to a credit card, clickity-click, lickety-split, I have my stuff, I'm all happy, yay Tennant and Tate on my computer, let the Shakespeare and fangirling commence!

HOWEVER, my bank, ever vigilant, as they should be, has noticed strange activity on my debit card. Declined purchases? Foreign website? What's all this, then? (My bank is not British. I don't think.) So they call me.

No, actually, a computer-generated voice calls me. It informs me that there is potential fraud on my account, and they want to verify my identity. No problem. Except, yeah, there is a problem. My cell phone SUCKS. The touch screen goes to sleep very quickly, at least during calls. Once you allow the dialpad to be seen, it canNOT be UNseen, which means much button-mashing when the phone is put in proper position against one's face.

Which is exactly where it needs to be, because for some reason, I have no button that will activate speakerphone on this very determined dialpad. And once the display goes to sleep again, during a call, it isn't just asleep, it's freaking Rip Van Winkle. Touching buttons doesn't wake it up. Sliding it open to reveal the keyboard does, but you try not mashing digital dialpad buttons while doing this, I dare you.

So of course, trying to answer these multiple choice questions, trying to prove I am me and not a Cylon or something (who'd know everything I know anyway so bad example) becomes very difficult. I manage to tell the damn computer-generated voice that I don't recognize one or more of the charges it has warbled into my ear, and thus I am informed that I will be transfered to a service representative. And *thus* was I put on hold.

For five minutes.

By a computer-generated voice.

That called ME.

This is a first, I've gotta say.

Once I finally talk to somebody that I can reasonably assume is made of at least as much flesh as is required to form vocal chords and politeness, I inform him that, no, there isn't actually a problem, so pleasepleaseplease do not cancel my debit card. He's very helpful. My card and account should be fine, and no I don't want the declined charge to go through, because their rejection was Right and Good because I'm Kind of Stupid. I also let him know that having the computer call people was not necessarily the best plan, time-saver though it may be. Because some people, like myself, have phones that suck. I also pointed out flaws in its question-asking subroutines that he said he'd pass on to his bosses.

That's pretty much the end of it (I hope), and I've got to say, I'm 80% amused and 20% confused, but that's only about the part where I was interrogated by Siri's slightly incoherent cousin.

Christmas Haul

Doctor Who - WWTDD? (neutron flow)
Happy Christmas/Tuesday to all in LJ (and DW) land! Hope everyone's having a Merry Happy, with a minimum of stress/disappointment/indigestion.

Very nice. :)

My Other Blog Is A TARDIS

Scrubs - sent from the future, destroy me, ugh
I didn't think I'd be doing this, but I wrote a long post on Tumblr, and I don't feel like reposting the whole thing here... so here's a link.

iTunes 11: Software Update should not cause Existential Agita, right?

Seems like I'm migrating there more and more. Not that I'd delete my (permanent) account on LJ, or my DreamWidth, because honestly, Tumblr is SO not a perfect platform. (It's good for pictures, but not so much for text, IMHO.) But yeah. Today, Tumblr won.

Summary: In a world dominated by technology, Amelia is guided by her visions and the stars. Almost everyone in Leadworth thinks that she's mad. She sees ghosts, faeries, and creepy crawlies. She hears voices coming from the crack in her bedroom wall, and she knows things that no one else knows. The only person who believes her is Rory, and he is the only one who keeps the shadows at bay.
Characters: alt!Amy Pond, alt!Rory Williams, alt!Mels Zucker, alt!Melody Pond, alt!Martha Jones
Spoilers: Through S6.
Rating: PG
Word Count: approx. 16,900
Disclaimer: Obviously, I own none of it. I would dearly love a TARDIS and a Doctor of my own, but I’ll just have to make do with borrowing them. I promise not to break them. It all belongs to the BBC.
Beta: arwen_elen, paintedpprglass
Notes: Part of the Noble Verse continuity, but can be read before or after any of them, including The Raggedy Man Takes A Promise. Oddly enough (for me) there isn't any cursing to speak of. Hunh.)

And it was good!

Zombies ahead
And by good, I mean I don’t have to light any candles tonight. ‘Less I wanna.

The storm has passed, my cellphone has no reception, but the electricity and the Internet have returned! (Also, the heat. THANK GOD, IT WAS COLD AS BALLS.)

Also, Happy Halloween, cause that still happened today. Even if the parade didn't. (Yet the Marathon is still on. Hunh.)

#Megastorm Sandy #or Super Storm #seriously #I wish they'd clear up their nomenclature #Stormageddon #is over #but most boring Halloween ever.

Stormageddon: The Moistening Part II

DS9 - Garak (trapped), trapped
So while we wait for the Noreastercane (Mega-Storm Sandy, whatever), I've decided that I should cook the frozen raw meat in my freezer... We have water, we have some canned food, we have many many candles (and flashlights), roomie is going out to get more tp and papertowels. (Why does the cat choose now to hork all over the kitchen? Seriously, she goes from spot to spot, horking as she goes...)

I am just in Zone B, which is not being evacuated, but other roommate's parents live in Zone A, so I'm sure they'll be coming over later. My job is also located in Zone A, so they're probably not gonna be open tomorrow. Got my HR phone number to call, and no one's going to expect me to come in, which is nice and reasonable. (Surprisingly so, really.)

So I'm okay for now. Anyone else here in the 900 mile storm coming to kick the piss out of the East Coast? (One map showed this shit extending all the way to where my dad lives in Central Ohio. So yeah.)

Didn't I do this last year? Except I'm actually nervous this time?

Oct. 4th, 2012

prepare to die, Transmet - pissed off, pissed off, fuck it
I work at a big box store in an operations/stock-related capacity. I am part-time, but I usually get about 30 hours per week. Still, I am not doing well financially. Etc.

Today, they cut hours, making me and the others in my department leave after only three hours. And we were told not to come in Friday, either.

So basically, I just lost 9 hours of pay.

I was so depressed, I actually took a four hour nap in the middle of the day. (I don't take naps, usually, because they give me headaches.)

Now I'm trying to edit and write something that I normally would find very fun and diverting and challenging, but I keep remembering how my manager basically took food and rent out of my hands today and I just get so damn ANGRY.

I'm letting myself eat (too much) candy, in hopes the sugar will lift my spirits. I'd watch TV, but none of the shows I'm currently watching are interesting me, and I'm not in a good place to start watching anything new. (Last thing I need to do, really, is watch more TV. Yeesh.)

I should read, but I can't concentrate on that, either. Which sucks, because I like the book I'm reading for YA bookclub (something my friends and I are doing for the last four months). I'm reading The Book Thief by Markus Zusak. On some level, I'm having trouble getting into it, but I do like it. It's an odd combination of feelings.

Cartography Shenanigans.

Torchwood - Tosh (sexy specs)
Okay.

So while I'm writing Pete's World stories, I inevitably get drawn into the world that has been 'built', alternately, with many alternations, you know, so it's different than 'our' world.

According to the Tardis wiki (which is really very useful for these nitpicky things most of the time), there's a United States of Mexico (which includes parts of the USA, specifically Arizona, and it is suggested that there's more...) and a "New" Germany (which is in Europe?) and Czechloslovenia. (Probably *owned* by Cybus, at least until 2007, when I presume the company collapsed, what with Cybermen and Lumic falling to his fiery death, and people like Pete Tyler Not Putting Up With That Shit Anymore.)

I know it's science-fiction, and a TV show and I seriously doubt that Davies et al put all that much thought into it... But Mexico having held onto territory like Arizona after the Mexican American War suggests that it's entirely possible that they held onto New Mexico (or at least half of it) and, you know... California. And Nevada. And Utah. And a nice big corner of Colorado. (Gadsden would never get to purchase anything, poor man.)

Anyway. Mexico has California... So where the hell would the United States put it's Los Angeles-like movie making powerhouse? This would have a potentially enormous effect on pop culture. Unless I understand nothing about these things. I mean, as my roomie pointed out, there would still be a place *like* LA. It just wouldn't be in LA.

So there's that.

But then I turn my attention to Europe. I mean, I thought there was something weird about the idea of a Czechloslovenia. And then I looked at the map, and yeah, sure enough. There's this whole country called AUSTRIA right between the Czech Republic and Slovenia. (I blame the fact that it's been many years since I was in school of any kind, and that's why I had to look at a map to realize what the issue was. Ah, America.)

The only way I can think to explain this sort of cartography-based shenanigan, is that after World War II, Europe got cut up into strange, strange pieces. Everybody got together and said, 'hey, you know, all these Central European countries are basically the same, right? Just shove them all together!" Then again, I think it would be more interesting if after WWII, everything was the same as it was here, but later, in the 70's or 80's, during poor financial times, Cybus and their little puppet companies just went around buying up countries and then repackaged them into brand new Czechloslovenia! (The name leaving out the countries stuffed in the center, because really, they didn't care about cultural identity or patriotism or independence or anything like that.) [This may be what I go with, in one form or another. No, I doubt that it will be important to any stories that I tell about TenII et al, but I like to know what kind of world characters are running around in. And boy is Pete's World ever screwy. Not that ours isn't. Just... Yeesh. Did they have no concept of anti-monopoly legislation?]

New Germany? Maybe Germany was rebuilt from its foundations after the war? Or there was the East/West split up, but after the wall came down, they decided to call themselves New Germany instead of just Germany. (Simplest, least mind-warpy version, to my mind. Credit to my roommate, who is much smarter than I am.)

Of course, given the premise that Czechloslovenia was owned by Cybus in some way, there is no way in hell that it would have remained all mashed together after 2007. I'm thinking the UN (or Pete's World equivalent?) would have to step in and jerry-rig some new borders, post-haste.

It's worth note that the wiki mentioned that both New Germany and Czechloslovenia had 'Free Information Collectives' -- groups that I presume were aware of the Cybus bullshit and actually made efforts to counteract or at least avoid it.

Oh. And South America is one big country with states in. I'm not even touching that.

Anyone out there on the flist interested in this? I'm sure most of you are better at this than I am. International relations and borders are not my strong suit. I'm tend to forget where Moldova is, or that Belarus is a country, not a city... Yeah... It's embarrassing. I also had to go to wikipedia to remind myself of the difference between the Spanish-American and Mexican-American wars. (I managed to conflate the two. Damn it, maybe I do need to go back to school.)
